Greater Sudbury Cubs goaltender Noah Beaulne made the most of his first start at the Centennial Cup on Wednesday as the local product made 22 saves to shut out College Francais de Longueuil at the Centennial Cup national junior A championship.
Beaulne and the Cubs knew they could not advance to the playoff round, having dropped their first three games at the event, including a 3-2 heartbreaker against the Calgary Canucks one day earlier, but Wednesday’s outing at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. offered the NOJHL champions to finish on a winning note.
Marshall McCharles scored twice and added an assist to finish the tourney with a team-high six points, good for 10th overall at the 10-team event.
Ben Lacroix got the scoring started against Longueuil, winner of the Quebec Junior Hockey League championship, with a backhand from the top of the crease at 10:14 of the first period, then McCharles doubled the lead with a drive off the wing and a shot between the goaltender’s pads at 13:20.
Justin Seguin intercepted a clearing attempt and darted between a pair of defenders before finishing at 5:47 of the second frame.
Cameron Shanks fired a puck upstairs from close range at 3:14 of the third, before McCharles added his second of the afternoon on a power play at 15:47, then Mason Chitaroni rounded out the scoring at even strength at 16:34.
Beaulne was named Player of the Game for Greater Sudbury, with winger Thomas Bourbonnais taking that honour for the Longueuil side.
